First Evening

The deer were so tame Campfire at Greenleaf

I had wanted to let my husband know that we had arrived safely to our destination, but I'd been unable to get a signal on my cell. When we asked Nick where we could find a public telephone, he invited us to use his landline. He assured me he had unlimited long distance, so on our way back to the cabin we took him up on his offer.

Three deer were eating acorns close to Nick's trailer as we pulled up. The animals looked up, then calmly returned to their dinner. While I made my call on Nick's porch, Chris took pictures of the deer. We were amazed at how unafraid they were. Watch Movie

When we got back to the cabin we built a campfire to make S'mores. Our friend, Gill, had given us a "Happy Trails" gift of the makings before we left. The fire pit, ringed with rocks, in back of our cabin was already set up with a starter log and a pile of firewood. We lit it with a match, but it was slow to catch fire. A man in the cabin next to ours brought over a little starter fluid when he saw our struggling fire. We added dry branches we found lying around the backyard, and before long we had a roaring campfire.

We played a game of scrabble while the fire burned down to coals, then with makeshift sticks, we toasted our marshmallows and made S'mores. Fifty-year-old memories drifted through my mind as we sat around the glowing embers and talked. When we were children we watched many campfires flicker on family camping trips. So long ago - and it seemed like yesterday.        Next Page          Watch Movie
